The Hoch Heritage Center, our public research facility and library, was named in honor of Dr. Clifford P. Hoch, a beloved philanthropist, whose tremendous support has been instrumental in sustaining the Historical Society. Over the years Dr. Hoch gave $500,000 in general operating support, which was used for projects such as expanding student programs, assisting with beautification projects and to purchase a new phone system. When he passed away in 2002 he contributed $1 million to the endowment to provide financial support to benefit the Historical Society now and in perpetuity.
His passion for history was fostered when he became a volunteer in the archives and collections. Dr. Hoch then became a member of the Board of Trustees in 1996, a role he continued until his death on September 8, 2002. He saw an opportunity to advance the knowledge of Fort Lauderdale's history by helping the Historical Society gain a stronger financial footing. His dream was that Fort Lauderdale’s history might be preserved for future generations.
Dr. Hoch was a Fort Lauderdale resident for more than 60 years and supported many local charities and nonprofit organizations including the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, Florida Grand Opera, First Presbyterian Church and the Broward Public Library Foundation. He also received ArtServe’s “Leadership Award” for his dedication and generosity to the community.
