In the 1950s, sportsman Frederick Van Lennep purchased the site of a short-lived boom-time horse track in southwest Pompano and established a training center for trotters and pacers, shown here in 1956. Van Lennep eventually won a long-term campaign to establish a harness track on the site; Pompano Park opened in 1964. Gene Hyde Collection.
