Alcee Hastings, then attorney for the local NAACP, pauses during a demonstration against alleged police brutality at Fort Lauderdale Police Headquarters, 1966. Hastings was the first black judge appointed to Florida by President Carter in 1979; he was impeached and removed from office in 1989.
